  • 1988: Jack Nicklaus had a special on pay-per-view. "That doesn't mean such entrepreneurs as Jack Nicklaus are sitting quietly by. Nicklaus is getting into the pay-per-view arena, too. Would you pay $12.95 to walk alongside the Golden Bear as he plays for a $100,000 first prize while giving you tips? That is what his production company is banking on. He will compete on April 25 in an Arizona event called The Desert Scramble, in which he will be teamed with Lee Trevino, playing against the team of Greg Norman and Ian Woosnam. The Pay-Per-View tab of $12.95 should cover the $100,000 to each of the winners. The losers are guaranteed $25,000 apiece. In addition, each of the winners of the last hole will take home $25,000. The golfers will wear microphones. Cameras and mikes will be with them. And if Nicklaus, say, gets into a sand trap, the director will switch to a video of Nicklaus explaining how to get of a trap. The show will be directed by Terry Jastrow." (New York Times, March 4, 1988)
