  • Lois Pope, an heiress who once owned the National Enquirer, was a regular host of charity fundraisers at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago. “These days you won't catch socialite Lois Pope reading her old tabloid, the National Enquirer. […] She inherited the paper after her husband died in 1988, selling it about a year later for a staggering $412 million. Pope received $178 million after taxes, legal fees and other bequests. […] She has since become a not-for-profit's dream -- a pipeline to some of the nation's wealthiest donors, with an eagerness to tap them. […] Employing the Enquirer's calculated mix of gossip and celebrity, Pope knows how to package her pitches. ‘There's a formula, maybe not quite as detailed, for this business, too,’ she says. Lesson one: Know what sells. In Palm Beach that means planning big affairs at glitzy hotspots like Donald Trump's estate Mar-a-Lago. […] Lesson two: Skimp on the details and donors skimp on their checks. Just last month Pope raised $100,000 at a rare-wine auction held at Trump's digs.” (Forbes, April 16, 2001)
  • Lois Pope lobbied Trump to accept a dog from her charitable foundation as he prepared to move to the White House as President. “As Donald Trump is preparing to move to Washington, D.C., he might have a four-legged friend to bring with him. Lois Pope has offered a 9-week-old goldendoodle named Patton to be the president's first dog. Pope confirmed this week that she suggested the part-time Palm Beacher adopt the dog when she saw him at Thanksgiving at Mar-a- Lago, as the Washington Post reported Tuesday. […] Patton comes from Pope's foundation, LIFE, which advocates for veterans and animal causes, and recognizes ‘hero dogs’ or dogs ‘doing extraordinary work’ in military, service, therapy, arson, search and rescue, law enforcement, and guide and hearing," according to the foundation's website.” (Palm Beach Daily News, December 9, 2016)
