  • 1981: Trump sued New York City claiming that city officials had wrongly denied him a lucrative tax abatement for development of Trump Tower on the former site of the Bonwit Teller building. “Donald J. Trump, the real-estate developer, filed suit yesterday against New York City and a city housing official for $138 million, charging that they discriminated against him by denying a tax abatement for a major building he is constructing. On Tuesday, a state judge ruled that the Koch administration had exceeded its authority by denying the tax abatement for the building, on the site of the old Bonwit Teller store on Fifth Avenue at 57th Street. Mr. Trump filed his suit in Federal District Court against the city and Anthony B. Gliedman, the Commissioner of Housing Preservation and Development, who rejected the tax abatement request last March.” (New York Times, July 23, 1981)

  • September, 2005: A federal judge denied Donald Trump’s request for a preliminary injunction that would stop his Hong Kong business investors from selling their investment stake in his development project at Riverside South. “Justice Richard B. Lowe III of State Supreme Court in Manhattan yesterday rejected Donald J. Trump's request for a preliminary injunction against his Hong Kong partners, whom he has accused of intentionally selling the Trump Place and Riverside South development on the West Side for half their true value. While the ruling does not end his claims against his partners, it permits them to collect the proceeds from selling the property, 77 acres between 59th and 72nd Streets. The partners, a consortium of Chinese investors, sold the development this year to Extell Development Company and the Carlyle Group for $1.76 billion. Mr. Trump, whose share of the sale is 30 percent, had sought to prevent his partners from investing the proceeds in another real estate project. Mr. Trump's lawyer, Marc Kasowitz, said he was disappointed by the ruling.” (New York Times, September 15, 2005)
