  • 1990: Marvin Roffman sued Donald Trump for intervening with his brokerage firm to have him fired after writing an analysis that predicted the Taj Mahal was overleveraged and would run into financial problems. “Marvin B. Roffman, the casino analyst who was dismissed by his Philadelphia brokerage firm in March after he criticized the Taj Mahal casino owned by Donald J. Trump, filed a lawsuit on Tuesday in the Federal District Court in Philadelphia against Mr. Trump and the Trump Organization. The analyst asserted that he had been defamed by them. He is seeking compensatory and punitive damages in excess of $1 million. Mr. Roffman, who has been a casino analyst since 1978, will also file a separate claim for more than $1 million in New York Stock Exchange arbitration proceedings against Janney Montgomery Scott, where he worked for 16 years. He was dismissed after Mr. Trump threatened to sue the firm unless Mr. Roffman was removed or forced to recant. Mr. Roffman has yet to find another job.” (New York Times, July 12, 1990)
